How to Prepare for the Moving Day

You have sold your home, for one reason or another, and now the clock has started ticking toward the day you will have to move to your new home. Are you already feeling anxious about your imminent relocation? Unsure what to do in order to prepare for the moving day, or how to do it? Scared even? Take a deep breath. Exhale slowly. Try to relax. And clear your mind of any terrible moving stories you may have heard from friends of yours, friends of your friends, relatives, acquaintances or strangers.

Hire professional moving service

Reputable professional movers know exactly what to do, when to do it and how to do it. And as you can deduce from the word professional, they help people move for a living, which make them experienced professionals. It’s best to contact at least three moving companies, ask them for a visual inspection of your house and a written estimate, which can be either non-binding or binding. This way, you’ll be able to compare the prices and get a more precise idea of how much the entire relocation process will cost you. And opposed to the somewhat risky decision to organize and perform the move yourself, by signing the moving contract (aka Bill of Lading) which the mover of your choice will have prepared for you, you automatically get basic limited liability coverage. Also known as moving valuation, this type of coverage may be enough for you. If not, you may opt for a Full Value Protection by a third party insurance company which guarantees that if anything bad happens to your belongings, you will get reimbursed. There are, however, certain limitations to it but don’t worry - your moving company will give you detailed information about it all, and even include, upon your request, an insurance policy in the final contractual documents for your convenience.

Get packing supplies and get down to packing

The king of packing supplies is boxes. There’s no doubt that you’re going to need a large number of clean boxes of assorted sizes in good overall condition. You may get them for free from your nearby supermarket, or you can buy them from your future moving company. Besides boxes, you will also need plenty of wrapping paper (avoid newsprint because any items wrapped in it will probably get stained from the ink and later you will spend extra time cleaning them), bubble wrap, heavy-duty tape, etc.

Packing is usually a very time-consuming process and this is exactly why you need to come up with a good sorting system to speed it up. It’s strongly advisable to conduct a full inventory of your house, starting from the rooms you use the least and working towards the one you use on a daily basis. Use marker pens of different colors and colored stickers to clearly label each box with its content, its final destination or any other special instructions, such as fragile, this side up, etc.

Prepare Open-First boxes

Having already packed all of your belongings, you may have to spend the night at your current home before the actual move takes place. Or you may arrive at your new home late at night and not have the chance to unpack. In either case, it is a great idea to prepare a few boxes with absolute necessities to last you a few days in worst case scenarios.

Useful items may include: non-perishable food, prescription medicine, plastic utensils, towels, sheets, a change of clothes for everyone, a blanket, toiletries, favorite games of kids and/or pets, some essential tools like a set of screwdrivers, an adjustable wrench, a hammer, a flashlight or any other lifesavers you can think of.

Get rid of excess stuff while guarding your valuables

The sifting process will surely reveal a certain amount of personal belongings with an uncertain fate. The decision to throw away any broken-beyond-repair or too-old-to-be-reused items is a relatively easy one, but what should you do with all the other usable stuff? Basically you have two options here: organize a garage sale for all the things that are worth selling and thus cut your moving expenses by pocketing some cash, or give them away to either family members and/or friends or to various charitable organizations.

Okay, this next one is really important so please pay close attention: whatever you do during this transitional relocation period, never let your valuables out of your sight.  They include cash, jewelry, debit and/or credit cards, expensive electronic equipment, and any essential documents like passports, driver licenses, product warranties, receipts and so on. These valuables are called valuables for a reason, so remember to check and double-check on them periodically just to make sure that they are safe and sound.

Spread the word and ask for help

You will have to contact your bank, your post office and your utility companies (electricity, gas, water, etc.) and notify them that you are changing your address. Ordering address labels is another practical idea for quick and easy notifications.

While you are spreading the news of your moving among your friends and relatives, either by phones calls, text messages, email messages or posts on your social networks, you may want to ask them for help with the preparations for the moving day. In fact, any help of any type is welcome. And it’s up to you to add some fun in the usually tedious packing process – some great music, take-out food and refreshments. Remember: details do matter.

Now, your moving experience will be a good one – swift, stress- and problem-free, as well as economical. All you have to do is follow practical guidelines above (and I have more of them here) and everything will be as smooth as silk. You’ll see.
